Update: Ad Alpes is published now! You can download the book here.
We’re launching the new, Legentibus version of Ad alpes — A tale of Roman Life (chapters 1–12) tomorrow. It’s one of the best Latin readers ever written.
Brief recap of what it is and who it’s suited for:
Ad Alpes is a novel-like Latin reader for upper intermediate-advanced learners. The text consists of a frame story where you follow a Roman family along their journey to the Alps. On the way the journey takes them to various towns and cities and all along they tell each other stories. These stories are nicely woven into the fabric of the frame story so that you don’t realize you are reading adapted passages from a wealth of Roman authors (e.g., Tacitus, Livy, Plautus, Pliny, and many more).
The Latin is rich in vocabulary and syntax. There are a wealth of notes that help, but you need to be familiar with Latin grammar and have a large vocabulary. But, it’s always best to try it and see how it works for you!
It was great fun recording it albeit much more difficult than I expected because of the number of characters. In the recording, I have tried to distinguish the characters and give them distinct personalities and voices to make comprehension and orientation easier.
I look forward to hearing how you like this Legentibus version of Ad Alpes.
I’ll be starting recording of the next sequence of chapters soon.
Valete!
